Three Horizons Mapping

Meeting date: Friday 24th October 2025

Meeting focus: Three Horizons Mapping

📝 Notes:

A note from Aala:

Thank you for joining the Regenerative Futures Fund (RFF) half-day session on exploring systems change through the Three Horizons framework. We know that “systems change” can mean many different things depending on where we sit and what we’re working on, so this session was designed to help us build a shared language and approach. The Three Horizons model is the same one we used with residents earlier in the year, and it’s the approach we’re asking you to use when framing your project proposal — to show how your work contributes to change across the system.

We began the day with an introduction to the Three Horizons approach:

  • Horizon 1 – What Is: the current system — the structures, habits, and rules that shape how things work today.

  • Horizon 3 – What Could Be: the future vision — what a more equitable or regenerative system might look like.

  • Horizon 2 – What’s Changing: the transition space — where new ideas and ways of working are being tested and evolved.

You spent time reflecting individually on your system — identifying the issue you’re working on, who holds power and influence, what’s working and what’s stuck, and where your current work sits across the three horizons. In small groups, you then mapped out your shared systems, highlighting what’s emerging and what a better future could look like. In our final discussion, we noticed strong themes across groups: the tension between responding to immediate need and enabling long-term change, the importance of collaboration, and the potential for RFF projects to act as bridges between Horizons 1 and 3.

As you continue developing your proposals, we encourage you to revisit your Three Horizons map or notes from the session. Ask yourself: Where does my current work sit — and where do I want it to move? What might it take to help shift the wider system toward your Horizon 3 vision? Your reflections will help make clear how your project contributes to meaningful, long-term change.

With thanks and appreciation,
The Regenerative Futures Fund team
